John Martin (left)
John Martin is one of the United States original microbrewers. He is the co-founder of one of the first brewpubs in the country and currently operates three brewpubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, under the umbrella of the J & R Martin Company. John's interest in brewing started at age 22, when attending homebrewing classes through Oregon State University Extension. He brewed his first batch of beer (a stout, and not half bad!) at a friend's old farmhouse near Philomath, Oregon, in the winter of 1982.
John is a co-founder of the California Small Brewers Association (CSBA), and has served as CSBA Treasurer since 1989.
John's company created and has organized The Berkeley Beer & Music Festival for the last four years. A fund-raiser for local non-profits and the CSBA, the Berkeley Beer Festival has become one of the largest outdoor brewers events in the State.
Reid Martin (right)
Reid grew up in Berkeley and Orinda, CA and graduated with a business major from Cal in 1979. He's been a brewer since his college days, "I remember brewing beer in the kitchen with my college roommates talking about 'wouldn't it be cool to own your own brewery,' never suspecting that one day I actually would."
After college Reid was accepted into U.C. Berkeley's MBA program but deferred his entrance to start his first business. That went so well he continued his entrepreneurial ways and kept deferring his entrance until the University finally kicked him out. He says "I figure I can always go back for a fresh start after I go bankrupt."
Besides Triple Rock, Reid is also the owner of Big Time Brewery in Seattle and has recently been working on a real estate project in Berkeley.
Reid's favorite beer style is India Pale Ale, "the hoppier the better."
